Did you know: dark oil isn't always bad! Oil can be very dark and still be effective. Oil changes color due to additives that darken during heat cycles within the engine, as well as the more well known cause of picking up soot and debris. Some synthetics can turn dark in just a few hundred miles and will continue to lubricate properly. Here's what to know:

- If you suspect an issue, it's best to err on the side of caution—ask for professional help if you think you might need it! Always follow your manufacturer's maintenance schedule for your engine
- Dark oil by itself isn't bad, but dark and THICK oil can indicate contamination by dirt, metal shavings, soot, and debris which inhibits lubrication
- Milky or Cream colored oil can indicate moisture contamination, the moisture will float through the oil like milk in coffee. If you notice this in your oil have your engine checked by a professional right away!
- Brown motor oil color is no cause for alarm on its own, just be mindful of the viscosity and the recommended maintenance schedule
- Gasoline contamination is difficult to find by color... but you can find it by smell! If your engine oil smells like gasoline, have your engine checked by a professional right away!
