April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s theme for this year is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity”. Fully addressing the issue of sexual assault requires the commitment and investment of an entire community. We must recognize power dynamics that exist, and the role that systems of oppression have on the prevalence and severity of this reality.
Many LGBTQ asylum seekers and refugees have been personally impacted by sexual assault and abuse causing them to flee their countries of origin. According to the Center for American Progress, LGBTQ immigrants are 97 times more likely to be sexually assaulted than the general detention population. Communities of color, LGBTQ and immigrant communities are often the groups that are most affected. We must support marginalized communities and strive to level out the inequities that exist in our society, in order combat sexual assault.
Sexual assault transcends class, race, sexual orientation, gender, age and all identities, it impacts all people and in order to approach this and work towards a safer and more equal society, we must bring awareness and have inclusive and accepting dialogue to address the issue. We must support, uplift and believe survivors in order to combat the stigma that surrounds sexual assault.
We are using our platform to vocalize the importance of bringing awareness to this issue, as well as sharing resources and organizations that work to create positive change for survivors and all people affected by sexual assault.
