Amy’s likes to imagine itself as a “family.” The company is named after the daughter of cofounders Andy and Rachel Berliner, and the official narrative depicts the venture as the natural outgrowth of the couple’s quest to obtain high-quality vegetarian meals for Amy when she was a child. “We still make our food like we’re in our personal kitchen,” the Berliners claim, “it’s just on a bigger scale.” If that’s the case, one shudders to imagine what goes on in the Berliners’ personal kitchen.
