Construction has begun at our newest project with the - a partnership rooted in years of shared care, listening, and a belief in spaces that help children thrive.
This next chapter transforms the second-floor classrooms of a former Santa Monica–Malibu USD school building from the 1940s into renewed learning environments for today’s children.
Honoring the character of the existing building while reimagining it for contemporary learning, the project is guided by a simple intention: creating spaces where children feel supported, curious, and ready to grow.
We’re grateful to be on this journey again with The Growing Place and excited to see the work taking shape. A special thank you to Vancrest Construction, whose care and craftsmanship are already bringing the vision to life.
More to come as the transformation unfolds.
The classroom doesn’t really stop at the wall.
On most projects, the conversation naturally moves outside—working with landscape architects to think about shade, planting, sand, and how those spaces are actually used day to day.
What matters is how the two connect. How the inside picks up on what’s happening outdoors, and how easy it is for kids and teachers to move between them. Sometimes it’s as simple as opening things up so an activity can spill outside without needing to reset.
Outdoor spaces are often thought of as just play areas, but they can hold the same kind of learning—just in a different way. A lesson can happen at a table inside, or it can happen outside with more room, more movement, and a bit more unpredictability.
It’s not about replacing one with the other. Just making sure both are there—and that they work together.

Some projects stay with you—especially when you finally get to experience them in use.
Todd, Summer and Marisol designed this interior space for HLB just after Covid, at a time when returning to the office meant rethinking how a workplace could feel.
This visit marked the first time Todd was able to see the space in person, shaped not just by design, but by the people who use it every day.
The team welcomed him with lunch, conversation, and a chance to see how the space has settled into its own rhythm.
Grateful to see it lived in—and to know it’s supporting the kind of everyday moments it was designed for.
Looking forward to the next opportunity to work together.

Spent Saturday at the 40th anniversary of The Growing Place in Santa Monica.
Ran into Ellen Khokha, founder and Director Emeritus, along with a lot of familiar faces, teachers, and longtime collaborators who’ve been part of this community for years.
One of those days where it’s less about the event itself and more about the people who show up. Good food, music, and the kind of conversations you don’t get on a schedule.
Always a nice reminder of how much history sits behind the work we see today.

For Marisol, design starts with making things clear.
She brings modeling and drafting skills that help clients actually see what’s coming — not just a rendering, but a real sense of the space before it exists. That ability to close the gap between concept and reality is what she does best.
Her experience spans commercial and educational projects, and she’s genuinely drawn to the community side of the work. The spaces where design has a real stake in how people show up and connect.
At March, she’s a collaborator first. Detail-oriented, versatile, and always thinking about the person on the other side of the presentation.
