The city of Santa Fe is proposing a scattered site model for supporting people experiencing homelessness. This is not a good idea and we need to oppose it. It's a leaf-blower response. People experiencing severe levels of poverty, trauma, and ill health that result in being unhoused need to be supported in ways that help stabilize them and their families and provide the necessary assets and resources for them to start thriving again. Scattering them around town or into the county, where those services and resources do not exist or are hard to access is not a solution. It may help tourists or local elites avoid having to see them, which is their biggest concern about Pete's place and just having poor people wander around downtown, but it does little for those in need. Taxpayers are paying for the Midtown property, and it has been promoted as a place that will help define and transform Santa Fe. Why not have that transformation and definition be based on an integrated, all-in campaign to end poverty, house those in need, care for the ill, and convene community conversations about ending our extractive economic practices, that create these negative outcomes, and creating a collective, mutualistic economy where we can all thrive. Midtown is near all the critical services and resources and has the space to develop those we are missing.
