Sheltie Rescue of Utah:
The goal of Sheltie Rescue of Utah is to help Shetland Sheepdogs who turn up in shelters, are found lost on the street, are no longer wanted by their owners, or whose owners can no longer care for them. 💧 Is your Sheltie suddenly emptying the water bowl every day?
It might be easy to dismiss it as hot weather or simply getting older—but excessive thirst can sometimes be a sign of an underlying medical condition.
One possibility is Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism), a condition most commonly seen in middle-aged and senior dogs. It develops when the body produces too much cortisol over time.
In addition to increased drinking, watch for:
💧 Urinating more frequently
🍽️ Increased appetite
🐾 Panting more than usual
🐕 A pot-bellied appearance
🦴 Muscle weakness or tiring easily
🦲 Hair thinning or hair loss
These signs don't automatically mean your Sheltie has Cushing's disease. They can also occur with diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, hypothyroidism, and even normal aging.
That's why diagnosis requires a veterinary examination and appropriate testing—there isn't a single symptom that confirms Cushing's disease.
The encouraging news is that many dogs diagnosed with Cushing's can continue to enjoy an excellent quality of life with proper treatment and ongoing veterinary care.
🐾 If you've noticed your Sheltie drinking more, asking to go outside more often, or showing several of these signs, don't ignore the changes. A conversation with your veterinarian is the best next step.
Sometimes the little things we notice today can make a big difference tomorrow.
Healthy dogs. Informed owners. Stronger futures.

🚙 Road tripping with your Sheltie?
• Secure your dog in the backseat in a hard travel carrier or with a dog seat belt. • Put the window up & lock the child lock.
• Attach leash before opening door.
• Use a cable tie/carabiner from crate door to frame to prevent door from accidentally opening.
• Double leash at stops and rest areas.
• Attach ID tags to collar & harness.
• Scout emergency clinics on your route. Have a scan of vet records accessible.
👀 If you see a lost animal in your travels, try to take a photo to post on area lost pet sites with date, time, location & direction headed.
