What was going on in Shakespeare's life, and in England, in 1588 when he was writing As You Like It? Tucked away from the corrupt court, Shakespeare’s play transforms the Forest of Arden into a whimsical laboratory where banishment becomes liberation and identity is nothing more than a costume to be tried on and tossed aside. In this sun-dappled world, Shakespeare's cleverest heroine, Rosalind—disguised as the handsome youth Ganymede—playfully tutors her own love interest in the very art of winning her heart, blurring the lines between performance and reality. The result is a intoxicating comedy that asks a daring question: if we are free to craft our own selves and societies, what’s to stop us from choosing joy?
