The project was originally funded by an NSF grant (NSF 0418351 Preserving and Enhancing Accessibility of Gosiute/Shoshoni Materials in the Wick R. Miller Collection. 2004-07. PI: Mauricio Mixco, co-PI Marianna Di Paolo). The Cortez Mine/Barrick Corporation began providing funding shortly thereafter, and allowed us to complete the transcription and the translation and a first proofreading of the over 500 narratives and songs recorded by Wick R. Miller in the late 1960’s to early 1970’s of fluent speakers of Shoshoni. The Barrick funding has also made it possible for the project to distribute the recordings as well as other materials at no cost to tribal members who request them.
