ACT Packs for Children

ms for at-risk families for seven elementary schools in Salem and western Roanoke County as well as financial support for over 180 school-age children. During the past five years, over $ 18,500 has been contributed to support the weekend “ACT Packs” program to provide breakfast and lunch items for 85 families over the weekend break. Funds are also provided to the school principals to provide discretionary money for emergency needs, such as school supplies, snacks, field trips, food, school fees and clothing. This funding will allow us to expand the program to support the increased number of families anticipated during the 2013-14 school year. In addition, we will be providing support to children during the summer months when school is not in session. The local principals indicated this is an increasing need since the at-risk children will not receive free or reduced breakfast or lunches during these months.
