Another session recap!
This session I carried House Bill 4043, which addresses and closes gaps in laws relating to animal neglect and abuse.
As I stated for the legislative record, the intent of this legislation is not to create crimes for ordinary activities where animals are killed for legal purposes, including hunting and fishing, livestock, and pest control. I did not want this legislation to threaten hunters, farmers, ranchers, fishers, or others that provide food and service to Oregonians. Thus, the bill protects these activities as they are currently practiced, including good animal husbandry.
I am proud to be a strong voice for our agricultural industry as we balance gaps in our legal system to protect animals.
I also had the privilege of speaking to Senate Bill 1576, also known as "Recreational Immunity." This legislation keeps our public spaces open for use, as Oregonians enjoy time together outside. It was passed in order to protect our cities and counties from costly liability, and I was proud to not only vote yes but also speak to the bill.
