A huge thank-you to Mount Carmel Student Ministries for spending two hours helping to pull w**ds at our John Gilbert Nature Trail and Old Ironsides properties. During their efforts, a friendly competition broke out to see who could pull the longest dollar w**d — and the winners pulled w**ds more than 6 feet long!

The Mount Carmel volunteers made an incredible impact, helping us keep these special places maintained, healthy, and welcoming. Afterward, the group returned to the Land Trust office for some much-appreciated A/C, water, and a quick visit to see where our work continues behind the scenes.

We are so grateful for these hardworking volunteers and their support of our mission!

As our nation celebrates its 250th birthday today, we’re reflecting on the founding commitments that continue to shape St. Simons Island.

In the July issue of Elegant Island Living Media Group, we honored the Charter Members of the St. Simons Land Trust—the early supporters who believed that the natural, scenic, and historic character of this island was worth protecting for generations to come.

More than 300 households helped launch the Land Trust in 2000, and nearly 130 of those members have supported our mission for 10 years or longer. Thanks to their vision, generosity, and commitment, the Land Trust and its partners have now preserved and protected 1,400 acres—nearly 15% of the island’s upland—including large preserves, pocket parks, green spaces, and historic properties across St. Simons.

As we celebrate all of America, we also celebrate the civic spirit alive right here at home. Our Charter Members remind us that history is not only something we inherit—it is something we help make.

Thank you to all who continue to help protect the places that make St. Simons so special. Happy 4th of July!
