God Pause

Isaiah 44:6-8
“I am the first, and I am the last; besides me there is no god.” These words offend many, for we live in a relativistic world where truth is not a priority. But when we talk about God, truth matters. God wants to be known. We don’t decide who God is. That’s why God spoke through the prophets of old and took on flesh and blood to dwell among us in God’s Son, Jesus Christ.
There’s no comfort for us if we get to choose who God is, but there’s enormous comfort for all who look to Jesus and confess, “Jesus is Lord.” When our hearts are restless, God gathers us again around God’s voice and we find peace, because Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life of every living being. Today, be still before God and let God’s unchanging Word quiet your heart.
Lord Jesus Christ, give us the courage to confess your name in a world where truth is often up for grabs. Thank you for showing us that you are the Way, the Truth, and the Life for all people. Amen.

Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23
In this parable chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus uses stories and daily realities to tell how God’s culture and values work. In the first nine verses he speaks of a prodigal sower who uses the common way of that time for seeding the soil. It is very unlike the sowing of seeds today, as farmers in sophisticated tractors with calibrated seeders scientifically insert the seed at proper depth. First century seeders wasted much seed. They broadcast it everywhere, which was precisely what Jesus was doing with his words. He spoke to a few who heard, some who were entertained, others who passed by, some who said “No” and others who said, “We hate you.” He just planted—and he wants his disciples to do likewise. We are all planters and we need to plant. Let us freely plant with our words and actions. Be prodigal with the news of God’s grace.
Lord, it’s no small task to plant your seed in what we say and do in every aspect of our lives, yet you urge us to do so. Holy Spirit, inspire us and guide us as we go, sowing your seeds of grace. Amen.
