Yes, I direct a lot of dislike towards squirrels but they do tell me when a tree’s pinecone seeds are ready. Pine cones ripen at random times, varying from tree to tree so that a few trees are always ready to drop seeds after a forest fire. When a tree’s seeds are ripe squirrels will strip its cones to get at the seed at the base of each scale on the cones. The ground beneath the tree will be littered with the scales and cone cores, along with partially eaten cone dropped by a clumsy squirrel.
Location and direction of hairs are one of the many structural features you should observe when identifying a plant. Elm leaves have hairs which all point towards the tip of the leaf.
