i thought i would share a little something im learning about my experience playing guitar recently.
(Sorry i havent been posting content lately, ive been taking a break from Social Media apart from the occasional daily sh*tpost on my reg profile)

Anyways, Ive been in the process of learning a beloved Metal album in full on guitar, (guess which one in the comments below?) and in between drilling difficult sections ive been noodling.

The noodling has gotten better. The creativity is flowing both musically as well as developing my own lyrics.

So what im trying to get at is learning someone else's material may get you out of a creative rut. You most likely wont be borrowing their riffs verbatim no worries. But you will be more confident exploring the neck and playing around with some of the shapes and tensions youll pick up from other artists.

Being a musician is being apart of a community, a communal tapestry of creativity. And thats pretty cool.

So ive dropped you in the ocean, and youre drowning in a sea of confusion trying to understand the wild stuff that resides within Oli's notebook.

Now, youre swimming to shore. And were starting at the very beginning, in the most shallow part of this vast ocean.

Heres a written how-to-sweep guide i created a few weeks ago that accompany the 3 sweep lesson videos i just uploaded!

Learn yourself something new today!!!

Here are some tips for sweep picking:
YOU CAN DO IT! ITS REALLY NOT AS HARD AS IT LOOKS/SOUNDS!!!! GO INTO IT WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!

1. Use your palm/fretting finger to mute any unwanted strings from ringing out.

2. The flow of the pick through the strings is crucial. For the following 3 exercises, the flow I use for each exercise is the same and as follows: (d-downstroke, u-upstroke, h-hammer, t-tap)

From 12 low B to 19 high E

D,D,D, U, D,D,D,D H, T
(the upstroke is on the 14th fret for all 3 exercises. The short 3 string arpeggio from the low B to A string can also be practiced as a cyclic 7 note run)

P-pull-off

from E-19 to 12lowB

Starting from the TAP

P,P, U,U,U,U,D,U,U (last could also be D if you are playing the full sweep again.)

Changing the direction of the stroke from UP to DOWN on the last note will set you up to play the arpeggio again. This pattern will flow so nicely once youve practiced it enough!
