WKAL began broadcasting on November 25, 1946, and was the first radio station licensed to Rome, NY. WKAL was built by Mike Kallet, who also owned a chain of theaters that included the Capitol Theatre in Rome, NY. We are patiently awaiting for power to be restored ( hopefully Friday at some point ) so that we can return to the air on 1450 AM.
Our tower site narrowly missed the brunt of the tornado, supposedly this general area is where the tornado began.
We are very thankful for the power crews that have come in from other areas in order to assist in the clean up and repairs. We are very thankful to see the team effort from private citizens, businesses and local and state representatives to help bring Rome back together and most thankful that no one was injured or killed during Tuesdays tornado.
P.S. ....whoever is dumping old tires, garbage and trespassing on the property, you will be dealt with. Hidden cameras are recording.
With no apparent new news developing at this late hour, we will resume regular programming at 1am
