ART HISTORY – LESSON ONE - Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic

The colors used in all three periods were earth tones, or colors like brown, red, black, yellow, and white. Burnt bones and charcoal from fire made shades of black. Paint was usually made out of minerals like limonite and hematite. Grounded calcite made a lime white color.

PALEOLITHIC
Man, the hunter and food-gatherer, took refuge in caves, where paintings were primarily found. The artist’s approach is naturalistic. An attempt is made to represent convincing poses by capturing the essence of the animals. Animals commonly depicted included, bison, deer, horses, cattle, lions, mammoth, and boars. The pigment stuck to the rough cave walls, because the paint seeped into the absorbent walls. Possible tools used by ancient artists include: large flat bone, chunks of red and yellow ochre, brushes from reeds or bristles, or stone scrapers, and perhaps animal fat as a medium.

MESOLITHIC
Due to the warmer climate, art moves from caves to outdoor sites such as vertical cliffs. or sheer faces of natural rock, often protected from weather elements by outcroppings, or overhangs. The biggest shift in painting occurred in the subject matter. Where cave paintings overwhelmingly depicted animals, rock paintings often included human groupings.

NEOLITHIC
Neolithic art underwent a complete transformation. Most of the art from the Neolithic period was inspired by daily events. Therefore, we find that art during this period consisted mostly of functional objects, such as pottery. Much of Neolithic pottery depicts designs including abstract and geometrical motifs, as well as natural forms. Pottery is an inseparable aspect of Neolithic man's everyday life, and often depicted a religious or social event.
