This is a Mangbetu figurative terra cotta vessel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These vessels were commissioned by ruling elites as prestige objects or royal regalia, often gifted to visiting dignitaries. The artwork depicts a woman with a highly admired elongated head—achieved through the traditional practice of head binding in infanc. While often utilitarian and used to hold items like palm wine, they were celebrated for their aesthetic representation of Mangbetu fashion and aristocratic ideals.
