The newly released DHS Inspector General report (redacted) on the attempted assassination of President Trump is a good reminder of the fundamentals of protection.
The report identifies multiple missed opportunities to detect, communicate, and disrupt the attack. It documents failures in planning, intelligence sharing, communications, coordination, and mitigating known vulnerabilities. But none of us outside the investigation knows every fact or every decision that was being made in real time.
The Secret Service did not establish a joint communications room with state and local law enforcement. As a result, information about a suspicious individual was not consistently reaching the protective detail in real time. In protection, minutes—and sometimes seconds—can make all the difference.
The report also highlights instances where known vulnerabilities were not fully mitigated and available resources were not used as effectively as they could have been.
The operational lessons are clear.
-Protection isn't just about responding well. It's about recognizing risk early, communicating effectively, and acting before a crisis unfolds.
-The strongest security operations don't rely on one person making the right decision at the right time. They build systems where information flows, vulnerabilities are addressed, assumptions are challenged, and every team member understands their role.
-Most failures aren't caused by a lack of information. They're caused by a failure to connect the dots and act before it's too late.
Protection is rarely about doing one extraordinary thing. More often, it's about consistently doing the basics exceptionally well.

A good reminder for every security professional. If your solution starts with 'Tase him in the face,' it's probably time to rethink the plan.
A recent viral video has sparked a lot of discussion about a security officer's use of force.
Our job isn't to win arguments.
Our job is to protect people.
People will yell at you. They'll insult you. They'll challenge your authority. That's part of the profession.
The real test isn't how you respond when people are respectful. It's how you respond when they're not.
Sometimes the best tactical decision is creating distance. Sometimes it's slowing the situation down. Sometimes it's simply letting someone leave.
Good judgment is the most important tool you'll ever carry.
At K17, we don't measure professionalism by how quickly force is used. We measure it by how often sound judgment, communication, and restraint prevent force from becoming necessary.
That's what real protection looks like.

On Mother’s Day, we recognize all moms—but especially the ones connected to this work.
The ones who raised protectors.
The ones who stand beside them now.
This job is demanding. Long hours, stress, missed time—and they carry it with us.
They may not wear the uniform, but they live this life too.
And none of this works without them.
A different level of appreciation.
Happy Mother’s Day.
