My approach is to teach the basics of good technique- to help each student to understand how his or her voice works- and then teach the student to apply good vocal technique to whatever style of music they are interested in. I help my students to identify and fix any and all problems in their technique, correcting issues with nasality, lack of clarity and power, poor diction, musical weaknesses an
d singing out of tune. I have also had great success in helping people who think that they are tone-deaf to learn to match pitch and sing in tune. I have helped many people who thought they could not sing to learn to do so. Some students have a lot of performance experience (such as performing with a band or in theatrical productions) and others don’t have that much, but come into lessons eager to do more. I fully support these students in preparing for gigs, performances or auditions. However, some people are just beginning to sing and/or have had little or no performance experience. With these students, I work on gently easing them into performance, WHEN they feel that they are ready and only IF they wish to do so. I am careful to do this in a gentle and gradual way that does not involve experiences that are inappropriately challenging or excessively intimidating. I also respect and appreciate the fact that some just want to sing for their own enjoyment and I am happy to support a student with this perspective. Above all, I am committed to making the lessons a FUN and rewarding process and providing an opportunity for my students to learn and grow, in every possible sense.
