You may have seen reports on the news or social media regarding recent outbreaks of what is being referred to as a "mysterious" canine respiratory illness. So far, outbreaks have been reported in Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Connecticut. At the current time, the cause of this infectious disease is suspected to be a highly contagious virus. It appears to be spread through direct contact or respiratory secretions from coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, labored breathing, eye and/or nasal discharge, lethargy and decreased appetite. The infection may initially present as a persistent mild to moderate cough. In some cases, it appears to develop into pneumonia, which can become severe and does not appear to respond to antibiotic treatment.

At this time, we are not aware of any local cases of this illness having been reported. We recommend avoiding exposure to other dogs, especially if they are exhibiting any signs of respiratory illness. If possible, avoid "high risk situations," such as boarding, dog parks, day care, etc. Do not allow your dogs to share water or food dishes or toys with dogs outside of your home.

If you notice your dog coughing or sneezing, please monitor them closely. Many common upper respiratory infections, like kennel cough, will resolve on their own. If they develop a fever, eye or nasal discharge, or exhibit labored breathing, lethargy, loss of appetite or their cough becomes severe, please call for an appointment.

As always, if you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to call.

We have fallen behind with our posts due to a crazy schedule. But lets see some of the fur-kids we have seen recently!

Silly Tokki playing with some toys. Imara was hiding in the tube next to him ready to pounce.!
