One of the biggest challenges with conservation work is to repair the old repairs. This image from the nitrate print of THE FLAPPER (1920) shows repaired edges with tape. If you look closely, you can see where the tape has discolored the image underneath. This is one of many challenges archivists face, and why continued conservation is necessary to keep our film heritage alive.

Reel Heritage: Giovanna Fossati on Exposing Film Heritage 03/13/2017

Hello everyone, it's Stephany.

I wanted to share a few things that Jessica from TIFF shared via email.

1) Giovanna Fossati of EYE Filmmuseum will be at TIFF and there will be a free livestream of it. More information can be found here: http://www.tiff.net/events/reel-heritage-giovanna-fossati-on-exposing-the-film-apparatus/
The URL is currently information about Prof. Fossati and her work, but the page will update when it's closer to the time of the livestream. For those who aren't familiar with Prof. Fossati's works, I'd recommend From Grain to Pixel: The Archival Life of Film in Transition.

2) I believe that both Rachels mentioned the online Cronenberg exhibit. That can be found here: http://cronenbergmuseum.tiff.net/

3) Rachel mentioned a talk about ephemera conservation. A video of this talk can be found here: http://www.tiff.net/the-review/reel-heritage-film-ephemera-and-collections-management/

4) More talks can be found here: http://www.tiff.net/higher-learning-digital-resources/
("Buried Treasures of Chinese Silent Cinema" and "Guy Maddin on My Winnipeg" look very cool!)

Reel Heritage: Giovanna Fossati on Exposing Film Heritage Giovanna Fossati of EYE Filmmuseum and the University of Amsterdam discusses new directions in film research and preservation, and presents an accompanying selection of silent shorts.
