North America has lost nearly 1 in 3 birds — Save The Rookery 11/15/2025

North America has lost nearly one in three birds since 1970 — except in one habitat. Wetland birds actually increased, thanks to targeted conservation efforts. Their success offers a blueprint for how we can protect other habitats.

Since 1970, North America has lost 2.9 billion birds — almost one in three.
The biggest declines hit the habitats most familiar to us: forests, grasslands, and even our own neighborhoods.

But wetlands tell a different story. Wetland birds are one of the only groups to see population gains, with waterfowl increasing by more than 50%. And it happened for one reason: habitat was protected.

This is the message we need to act on. When habitat loss stops, declines stop. When we restore habitat, populations rebound. And when communities fight for the places they love — like our rookery — the impact is measurable, not symbolic.

We know what works. Now we have to apply it. 🌿🪶
