Specialties – Learning disabilities, dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism and transforming learning, behavior and social skills Helping parents invest in the academic growth of their children. Specializing in learning disabilities, autism and transforming the learning, behavior and social skills of all learners. Fit Learning programs target core skill components that have been determined through years of
research and testing to be critical predictors of long-term academic success. Each learner's program is individualized based on their initial assessment. Learners participate in fast-paced learning sessions that focus on building both accurate and fluent learners. Fit Learning programs are available in Reading, Mathematics, Logic (Advanced Language), Penmanship, Spelling, Expressive Writing and Lil' Fit. Our Lil' Fit program prepares our early learners for the rigor of the academic setting by providing them with a solid foundation in reading, mathematics, language and penmanship. As the oldest of 4, I have always struggled with the realization that schoolwork was easy for me but oh so difficult for my siblings. They hated school. 20+ years later and I am watching this story enfold for my nephews. But this time, I am immersed in their learning – teaching them to read, write and do math, whilst also fighting with the schools over the quality of instruction, outcomes and more. It breaks my heart that this cycle is being repeated. As a general/special education teacher, I have worked in the public school setting for more than 20 years first as a teacher then in administration and finally at the university level. In these roles, I was in a position to see the good, the bad and the ugly of working in school systems. The good – dedicated and passionate teachers; the bad – really poor instructional methods; and the ugly – just get the kids to pass the test. The problem was that too many kids were not receiving the level of instruction they needed to pass the test but more importantly, to be successful in life. Always on a search of better ways to reach kids, I began researching, attending and dialoguing with leaders in the field of behavioral science to discover how we could produce better outcomes. My search landed me at a conference in Ohio in 2016. Kendra and Donny Newsome of Fit Learning Reno at their presentation on Relational Language and Precision Teaching. I soaked up the presentation. Afterwards I couldn’t move fast enough to reach them, to gush over the presentation, and to beg an opportunity to visit their lab. This was the beginning of many conversations and in less than 8 months, I had opened an affiliate learning lab in the Roanoke area of Virginia. The work I do is so very important to the families of children with learning disabilities, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, autism, ADHD, and more. Daily I get to witness lightbulb moments, the emergence of new skills, growth in confidence, the strengthening of social skills and the reduction of problem behaviors. I accomplish more in a single week with my learners than I’d accomplish in a full academic year for many of my former learners. Being in a place where I can produce 1-2 years of growth in 40 hours and see the transformation of the lives of learners is such an honor and an amazing experience.
