In the postsecondary and continuing education of healthcare professionals, medical simulation is recognized as a basic teaching resource. It reduces pressure on already limited access to live clinical exposures, increases confidence of learners, improves patient safety, and adds rigor to the credentialing and precepting process. The Center for Medical Simulation and Research (CMSAR) exists to fulfill the requirements and demands of this emerging standard. To that end, CMSAR must exist as a full-time enterprise, must be championed and assimilated by an experienced leader, and must be positioned to design and employ, as well as reject, new and inventive methods of presenting the varied components of clinical competency and the diverse aspects of medical education.
