On most semi-auto pistols, if your slide locks back and won't go forward into battery, it could be a bulge in your barrel. Typically this occurs when there was an obstruction in the barrel when you fire it. For example, you fire the gun, but instead of getting a loud bang and recoil, you hear a suppressed sissing sound with little to no recoil. This is caused when just the primer goes off and there's no gun powder in the round to push the round out. Often the bullet will only go half way up the barrel and lodge in it. If you fire another round, this obstruction will frequently bulge or rupture the barrel and lock up the weapon. The bulge is usually severe and the barrel will no longer fit through the front hold in the slide that holds it. Another cause is from shooting lead bullets from barrels with polygonal rifling like on a G***k pistol. Lead is deposited inside the barrel and can eventually cause an obstruction resulting in a slight bulge like in the below picture. It might be hard to see, but the dimensions between a slide and barrel and very tight. This barrel had to be replaced.

The S&W M&P pistol is a full size 9mm or .40 caliber battle gun commonly used by security and law enforcement agencies. It comes with three (3) backstraps to adjust the grip to different size hands. It's a very comfortable gun to shoot, but one common problem is how the right pad on it's ambidextrous slide stop breaks off. It's easy to fix, but a common problem.
