In 1954, architect Edward Durell Stone unveiled the American Embassy in New Delhi, wrapping the building in a dramatic screen facade made with his Empress Breeze Blocks.
Two years later, he brought that idea home.
In 1956, Stone transformed a traditional 19th-century house in Manhattan’s Lenox Hill with a bold midcentury facade, covering the front with those same Empress Breeze Blocks.
And this was not just a client project.
Stone lived here from 1956 to 1964.
Today, the home is a protected New York City landmark, and the Empress block facade still stops people in their tracks.
