The third shoe to drop in settling our 2025 obligations here in Japan arrived today in the form of our updated National Health Insurance premium assessment and payment schedule.
The bill turned out to be quite a bit higher than Yumiko and I expected, apparently because the treaty-based tax treatment that applied to our national and resident tax filings did not appear to affect the health insurance premium calculation in the same way.
Coverage for the next twelve months will now be paid in ten monthly installments, after which our premiums, as a couple, will be recalculated based on our next year’s income figures.
Another lesson learned in this ongoing 🇯🇵 adventure.

Another treasure picked up during yesterday’s antique outing to Shimada is this solid iron 文鎮 (bunchin)—a traditional Japanese paperweight—shaped like a long, slender cucumber.
My opening offer to the shop owner was ¥1,000 ($6.30 USD), which he accepted immediately without any further haggling. Always a satisfying outcome. 😄
It’s now the perfect tool for holding down the pages of whatever I happen to be reading when I leave the door open and let the warm summer breeze drift through the room. 📚🍃🇯🇵
