Thirteen years later, he found himself at the Academy Awards accepting an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. From The Reporters Inc.’s Archives: In 2019 reporter Rachel Lieberman ventured to a rest stop in a suburban Minnesota community to find several people living inside their cars. The discovery led to an in-depth examination of the state’s still-soaring homelessness crisis. Six years ago, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development counted nearly 7,000 homeless people in Minnesota. Today, that number has increased to 9,201. The reasons? A continued lack of affordable housing and employment, as well as discrimination. And as Lieberman revealed, even for homeless people who work, the gap between living on the streets and living in a house is often insurmountable:
