Translation Review at UTD

NEW issue of Translation Review—TR 124—contains articles that span the globe. The issue opens with David Lee’s reflections on and translations of K’iche’ Maya poet Humberto Ak’abal from Guatemala; this is followed by Kizito Tekwa’s article on the importance of foreignizing translations of African oral literature; Bita Takrimi’s article focusing on translating sound and vision in Houshang Irani’s poetry; Ekrema Shehab’s comparative study of Human and AI translations of Arabic-to-English literary works; and Shubham Mamgain’s article on translating form and function in honkaku detective fiction and Garhwali verse satire. The issue closes with reviews of an anthology of modern Russian poetry, a new volume of translator portraits, and a translation of a play.

The new issue of Translation Review—TR 122—is now available online. The issue opens with our interview with famed translator Peter Bush who has been greatly influential in the growth of literary translation as a profession and as an academic discipline. The interview is followed by Anne Milano Appel’s translation of an excerpt from Italian translator Silvia Pareschi’s 2024 publication of Fra le righe: Il piacere di tradurre [Between the Lines: The Joy of Translating]; H.S. Komalesha’s translation of excerpts from Dharamveer Bharati’s Kanupriya (1959); Safi Mafouz’s article on the challenges of translating Medieval Arabic literature; and Paula Haydar’s analysis of four translations from Arabic into English of Abu Nuwas’s poem “Daʿ ʿanka lawmī.” The issue closes with reviews of works in translation and scholarship on translation.
