Programming to reach your goals is a very important piece of training. Performance goals, physique goals, health goals, etc. However, there are certain times where certain goals have to take priority over others.

I have been very open about my grief journey the past two years. After signing up for two super fights (the second which I dropped after an injury) I realized that “grinding” wasn’t getting me any closer to feeling real happiness rather than just some semblance of it.

As I was reading one of Martha Beck’s books, she mentioned that when experiencing grief sometimes what we need is deep rest. This seemed so off for me to do now (almost 2 years later 😞) considering I didn’t work for months after my dad passed away. But I realized that I not only pushed myself to get back to training soon after, but also, experiencing a tragic loss doesn’t feel anything like rest! It feels like surviving (when you don’t quite feel like it) which is exhausting.
So now, I’m listening to my body. I’m training the way I enjoy (lucky for me, I love explosive training 🤗). I realized that I was feeling burned out in Jiu Jitsu, so I drill when I want, roll hard when I want and have fun at the gym. My love for the sport is expanding again, and so is my love for what my body can do. I’m looking forward to competing again and am enjoying rolling again which feels amazing.

What has helped you guys overcome difficult experiences? 👇🏽

Can’t play half my game, but feels great to train with the homies again!

Unfortunately won’t be participating in this coming weekend after an ankle inversion injury. This feels like a wake up call that I need to focus on recovery, and not only be in “beast mode” when I do physical activity 🤦🏽‍♀️ Time to strengthen these ankles, and up my JJ game as I usually do when I have to get creative with my movement 🤗🌈
