Scam Alert: Fake CAPTCHA Pop Ups

We all know that CAPTCHAs are essential safety tools that help keep us safe on the internet. But did you know, scammers are now mimicking them to trick people into running harmful commands on their devices?

CAPTCHAs are designed to verify your humanity by presenting challenges that are easy for a person to understand but difficult for an artificial intelligence or software script to solve. CAPTCHA tests often ask you to perform actions like selecting all the fire hydrant pictures or retyping a string of distorted letters and numbers. But if a CAPTCHA tells you to press keyboard shortcuts and execute commands. Something like “Windows + R,” then “Ctrl + V,” and then “Enter.” That’s a red flag. Doing that can secretly install malware that steals your email logins, banking info, and more.

Remember:
✔️ Real CAPTCHAs never ask you to run commands or download anything.
✔️ If something feels off, close the page right away.

If you think you clicked a fake CAPTCHA:
• Disconnect from the internet
• Run a full security scan
• Use another device to change your passwords
• Turn on two factor authentication
• Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov
