We've got some nasty high temps on the way this Wednesday through Saturday! We know there a lot of folks new to the area that have started a homestead and may be new to raising livestock. These temps aren't just dangerous for your household cats and dogs, but for your chickens, ducks, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, etc. Here's some things you can start preparing for now to make sure they stay safe! Prep for the heat the way you would any other type of severe weather.

1) Electrolytes - get some electrolytes on hand to mix into their water (make sure its right for your species as some contain species specific minerals as well). This will help to keep them hydrated more than water alone.
2) Speaking of water, check those frequently! Not just to ensure its full, but to make sure it isn't hot. Automatic waterers often refill hot water that's been sitting in a hose. Freeze some ice in trays to help keep it cooler longer. (Chickens love frozen fruit and berries in the water!)
3) Shade + Ventilation is magic! Make sure shaded areas have proper ventilation, add fans for airflow when feasible
4) Misting System- you know those water misting systems around theme parks or pools that feel great without make you drenching wet? They are pretty cheap on Amazon and can make a great little cooling station in the shade for a lot of species of livestock (NOTE: not the right choice for all types of livestock, so do a quick google search).
