Any sudden speech abnormality should be treated as a potential stroke until proven otherwise.
Speech changes are often one of the earliest signs of stroke. Whether a patient has difficulty finding words, slurred speech, trouble coordinating speech, or a sudden change in voice, EMS providers should maintain a high index of suspicion.
Your priorities should include:
🧠 Perform a rapid stroke assessment (BE-FAST, FAST-ED, or your local protocol)
🩸 Determine the patient's last known well time
🩸 Assess blood glucose to rule out hypoglycemia
🚑 Transport promptly to the most appropriate stroke-capable center
📞 Provide early notification to the receiving facility
Early recognition and rapid transport can make a meaningful difference in patient outcomes.
