At least 1200 years old, this shield with an owl figure is attributed to the Moche culture of Peru’s Piura region. It is made of gilded copper, silvered copper, shell, beads, and fibers, and features a nearly three-dimensional owl with movable wings and head, inlaid eyes, and elaborate dangles, reflecting the Moche’s advanced metalworking and symbolic artistry.

It measures 26.7 x 26.7 x 2.5 cm (10.5 x 10.5 x 1 in).
This artifact is now housed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, New York, United States. It was bequeathed by Jane Costello Goldberg from the collection of Arnold I. Goldberg in 1986.
