While you may want to outdo Clark Griswold, use common sense and take extra precautions so you can fully enjoy this holiday season.

- Don’t overload outlets or extension cords.
- Keep cords out of the water and away from metal objects.
- To hook up your outdoor lighting, use a three-prong grounded extension cord with the UL label.
- Uncoil extension cords entirely before using them, and be sure to place them away from heat sources and bulbs.
- Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect.
- Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.
