The government shutdown shines a light on Americans' poor savings habits, research shows 01/20/2019

Several studies confirm the majority of Americans will require financial aid during minor emergencies. Moreover, even more citizens would be financially insecure during major disasters like an earthquake. Improving our individual financial security will improve the rate of recovery, while decreasing concerns of nutritional deprivation thus reducing child morbidity significantly. Local, State, and Federal assistance typically begins 96 hours after an event occurs. However, if the majority of residents are in line, how quickly will you get the supplies and funds you require to sustain your family.

The government shutdown shines a light on Americans' poor savings habits, research shows During this shutdown, one important thing has been clear: Many federal employees don’t have the savings needed to pay for their housing, cars and more.

THE UCCU Center at UVU Orem Campus will be turned into a disaster evacuation shelter on Monday, September 25 from 4-8pm. Community members, students, and all others are welcome to come and learn first hand from the American Red Cross what sheltering is all about.

Many disaster victims in Houston, Florida, and Puerto Rica are homeless and staying temporarily in Red Cross shelters. This is an opportunity for Utah County residents to learn about sheltering and how to prepare for disasters. You only need to show up.

Volunteers are needed to help with the exercise. Red Cross training will be held Thursday, September 21 at 5:15 p.m. at the UVU Emergency Services Building, 3131 Mike Jense Parkway, near the Provo airport. If you can't make the training, show up at the UCCU center at 3 p.m. if you want to volunteer.
