ans have made in every facet of life—from science to music to athletics. We also aim to bring awareness to the state of the black community, particularly in Woonsocket, recognize the black owned businesses here in the city, inspire more young adults to become involved in their community, and “piggy backing” on the spirit of events held during the weekend of the 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, we hope to forge a more unified City with a primary focus on the development of ALL youth. Black History Month 2012 in Woonsocket was filled with a host of fun and engaging activities for all ages including: history presentations, a film screening, a black trivia competition, a trip to the JFK Library in Boston to attend an African dance and drumming presentation, and a captivating community forum which brought attention to many of the social and political issues we are currently faced with in Woonsocket, that we can and MUST come together on to bring about change for a better community and more promising future for our youth. Although February is the only month deemed Black History Month, this was just the beginning of the continuation of a lifelong Celebration. The group will continue to be active, throughout the year, hosting more activities and events which will highlight the work and achievements of African-Americans, and other minorities, both nationally and locally. For any events held that require a fee, the monies will be used to help support Black History Month for the following year and to support other community initiatives.
