One of the best things you can do to protect the longevity and condition of your camera lens is to use a lens cover. Consistently place the cover on whenever the camera is not in use - and purchase a replacement cover if the cover is ever lost.
Lens fungus can occur when moisture gets inside the lens, either through direct exposure (such as rain) or high humidity. You should have your lens inspected by a professional at the first sign of fungus.
Because young children want to do everything you do, they will eventually want to use your camera. To protect your camera from little hands, purchase a small cheap camera or even a fake camera that kids can use.
