The ballroom was built for people who never wondered where their next meal would come from.

Gold walls, crystal chandeliers, polished marble, champagne glasses, silk gowns — and in the middle of it all stood a barefoot little girl in a torn beige dress, her dirty toes pressed against the cold floor beside a black grand piano.

Every guest turned to stare.

The girl swallowed, holding her hunger behind trembling lips.

“May I play… for food?”

For one breath, the room stayed quiet.

Then the laughter came.

Loud, sharp, cruel laughter echoed through the enormous hall. Women covered their mouths with jeweled fingers. Men in tuxedos looked her up and down like she was entertainment brought in by mistake.

The girl flinched, but she did not run.

She placed one small hand on the piano, climbed onto the bench, and lowered her dirty fingers over the perfect white keys.

The laughter faded when the first note sounded.

Soft.

Broken.

Beautiful.

Then the melody grew, haunting enough to make the champagne glasses stop halfway to people’s lips.

Near the piano, an older man in a dark tuxedo turned slowly. His face changed as he listened. The song had stolen every trace of arrogance from him.

He stepped closer, staring at the girl’s hands.

His voice trembled.

“That song…”
