The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday with strong bipartisan support that would compel TikTok's Chinese owner to sell the popular video-sharing app or face a ban in the country. This move signifies an intensifying confrontation between Beijing and Washington regarding control over crucial technologies impacting national security, free speech, and the social media landscape.

Despite TikTok's efforts to rally its vast user base of 170 million Americans against the bill, and the Biden administration's warnings about Chinese ownership posing serious national security threats such as election interference, a broad coalition in Congress supported the measure. The bill seeks to address concerns by requiring ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, to sell the app to non-Chinese entities within six months to alleviate national security apprehensions. Failure to comply would lead to a ban on the app.

Representative Mike Gallagher, a leading proponent of the bill, emphasized its significance in safeguarding national security interests and severing TikTok's ties with the Chinese Communist Party. While the bill faces hurdles in the Senate and potential legal challenges, its passage in the House reflects growing bipartisan consensus on addressing national security concerns related to Chinese-owned tech companies like TikTok.
