96th Infantry Division

My son was recently on a trip in Montana. He stopped at a small little museum in Polson, Montana called The Miracle of America Museum.

The museum is a massive collection of American History. One that is a good representation of what American History represents. Please stop there if you are ever in Polson.

While there, he happened to notice a pile of original military patches, each for sale to raise money for the museum. The museum is a non-profit, not supported by the State or Federal Governments. And there, in that pile, he noticed this patch, one that his friends questioned his purchase of such a plain seemingly insignificant patch. Even the museum curator had no idea the significance of the patch.

With a sparkle in his eyes, as though he had found a treasure, he proudly told them, this is the Division patch of the US Army 96th Infantry Division, “The Deadeyes”, my grandpa was a Deadeye in WWII, he told them. The museum curator offered to give him the patch, but he said no, I’ll pay for the patch, the Deadeyes were the best shots in the army, and this patch was earned by a brave soldier someone loved, and he probably served and fought for us in the Pacific.

So, my comment today is not only Remember the Deadeyes, but teach your children and grandchildren about them, and what they did, and who they were. Most importantly teach them Freedom is never Free!

Lest we forget, today we honor those that paid for the freedoms we all enjoy, by the ultimate sacrifice of giving their life to their country. Do not forget them, cherish their memories, and remember, Freedom is not Free.
