When you visit your primary care doctor for an annual check up a standard lipid panel is ordered as part of routine labs. This lipid panel includes what doctors describe as the 'bad' LDL cholesterol and the 'good' HDL cholesterol. In truth, that is an over simplification but it gets the main point across to our patients. It is always nice to step back and look at the big picture. Why do we even care about your LDL cholesterol? It is to make an educated guess on your future risk of getting a heart attack or stroke or diabetes, etc. So when your doctor says your cholesterol levels are normal, you should naturally feel relieved. But I urge to dig deep into the numbers and truly understand your risk. This is important because if you realize your risk is elevated early in your life you can make the necessary lifestyle habit changes and get back on track. we spend time with our patients and educate them on the markers that best stratify your heart disease risk such as non-HDL, apolipoprotein B, LDL particle number and size, HDL size, hs-CRP and lipoprotein (a) level.
The normal LDL cholesterol level most doctors recommend is different based on your overall risk level and is either less than 160 or 130 or 100 mg/dl. The level of LDL cholesterol we recommend for ALL patients is between 50-70 mg/dl. At that range the chances of any atherosclerosis (plaque build up in your arteries) progressing is minimal.
If your LDL cholesterol is higher than 70mg/dl try our intensive therapeutic lifestyle change program to bring that number down and lower your risk of future heart attacks and strokes. Contact us at [email protected] to learn more.

This was based on analysis from 3 large studies conducted by Harvard researchers that looked at over 200,000 US adults. I applaud those that have chosen to consume a plant focused eating pattern as it will not only help your health and wellbeing but improve the economic and environmental burden to society as a whole. But a plant based diet can technically be beer and chips! Focus on whole foods such as whole vegetables, whole fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. This is what will help you reach your goals of improving mood, losing weight, controlling blood sugars, improving cognition, etc. In the same study mentioned above, a healthy plant based diet reduced risk of diabetes by 34%.
our intensive therapeutic lifestyle change program can help you control and even reverse your diabetes. Email us at [email protected] to learn more.

As part of the medical assessment unknown sleep disorders may be diagnosed. The most important of these sleep disorders to uncover is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). It is extremely common and underdiagnosed. Snoring is a common symptom and may seem harmless (unless you are the nearby partner in bed!) but if it is OSA, it is doing incredible harm to the body on a daily basis. This is a must diagnosis to treat. We will likely refer you to get a sleep study at a local spot such as with Dr. Root

Have faceless humans with long hair been keeping you up at night? If so....Goodluck! But if your sleep has been off and on lately and you have noticed the effects of that poor sleep more and more during the day, you are definitely not alone. 60 million Americans suffer from poor sleep yet only 10% see their primary care physician. This is likely because society takes sleep for granted. Our culture even embraces those who can function on low amount of sleep. It's like a badge of honour to complete a project or presentation while getting very little sleep. This is unfortunate because sleep is incredibly crucial to living a life without chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, hypertension etc., mood disturbances and avoiding Alzheimers dementia later in life. Even day to day functioning is affected in subtle ways with minor sleep changes. we created a program that includes a 90 minute evaluation then weekly contact for 3 months to help master the Art of Sleep. It will change your life. Email us at [email protected] to learn more.
