We’ll wrap up our fall celebration season at 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨 (𝐏𝐌𝐄) — the U.S. West Coast’s largest and longest-running commercial fishing and marine trade show, presented by National Fisherman. For more than 50 years, PME has brought together mariners, innovators, and industry leaders shaping the future of the Pacific.

This year’s Expo carries special meaning — it coincides with the 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐒𝐂 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, co-hosted by 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐒𝐞𝐚 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 and the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission (𝐎𝐃𝐂𝐂).

Following our 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟑 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭, 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐨𝐧, where we connected with 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 to exchange ideas about the fishery’s future and the potential pathway towards the 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 (𝐌𝐒𝐂) certification, the Seattle session will continue that conversation on a broader, coastwide scale.

At 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐒𝐞𝐚 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, we’ve seen firsthand how different contexts shape the path toward responsible fisheries — from Oregon’s Dungeness crab to 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐊𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧. Running two credible 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 (𝐅𝐈𝐏𝐬) in parallel offers a unique lens into what sustains progress — and what can stall it. Both fisheries are deeply embedded in their coastal communities, grounded in generations of fishing tradition and local stewardship.

The 𝐎𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐛 𝐅𝐈𝐏, launched in 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎, began as a market-driven initiative initially encouraged by a major retailer and is now advancing toward MSC certification through coordinated efforts among fishers, managers, and market supply chain actors.
New buyers and retailers have since joined, reinforcing industry commitment — even as the fishery continues to navigate stock assessment challenges and the ongoing need for broad stakeholder engagement.

Meanwhile, the 𝐊𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐈𝐏, initiated in 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏, continues to rebuild a fishery under complex regional and geopolitical conditions. With a legacy of hatchery influence and depleted wild chum stocks, the project focuses on strengthening scientific capacity, governance, and management systems to support long-term recovery and maintain international credibility.

Across these two distant regions, several shared realities emerge:
⚖️ Commercial incentives remain uneven, especially where immediate market benefits are limited.
🌐 Market demand fluctuates and buyer interest shifts, testing commitment to long-term sustainability goals.
🤝 Stakeholder engagement is complex, requiring time, trust, and continuity.
🌍 Geopolitical and trade constraints add further uncertainty — particularly for Russian fisheries.

Scientifically sound management depends on continuous government support, strong fishery collaboration, and adaptability to emerging challenges — including social dimensions that are often harder to address but equally essential to long-term sustainability. Evolving global trade mechanisms can also have drastic impacts, underscoring the need for resilient and adaptive fisheries.

Still, progress continues. By using the 𝐌𝐒𝐂 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 as a practical tool for improving management — not just as a certification goal — and by fostering cooperation among 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐬, 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬, 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬, both FIPs show how sustained collaboration and investment in coastal fishing communities can drive meaningful change, even under unpredictable conditions.

Our long-term aim is to strengthen the link between 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 — proving that credible, responsible fisheries can thrive in any context.
