I wrote Bywater after my first visit to New Orleans. My friends lived in the Bywater neighborhood, and it was my introduction to that wonderful city. I loved how you could be walking down a quiet stretch of houses and suddenly find yourself at a corner store, or inside a bar like BJ’s Lounge or Bacchanal — both regular stops back then.

Most of these photos are from that part of town, where the channel meets the Mississippi River. We’d walk along the levee, sit by the water, or bring a picnic up there for sunset. That place got under my skin in the best way.

While the song moves through different parts of New Orleans, it all started in that neighborhood. I liked turning “Bywater” into “by the water,” letting the name shape the heart of the song.

I’ll be sharing more thoughts, stories, and little windows into this track and others. If you’re into that kind of behind-the-scenes stuff, stick around.

The Wandering Kind and I will be meandering our way up to Seattle on May 15th to play with .lfb and ! I'm excited to get on the road with the boys, and to play the famed Connor Byrne Pub! If you're in the area, we hope to see ya there!
