Nordic Northwest is excited to announce Andrew Haight as our new Executive Director, beginning June 29. Andrew’s appointment follows a thoughtful and collaborative search process shaped by the participation of Nordic Northwest’s board, staff, volunteers, community members, and hiring committee, whose care and commitment helped guide this important decision. Andrew brings many years of experience in cultural institutions, education, public engagement, fundraising, and organizational leadership, including his current role as Director of Individual Giving at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) and previous leadership roles with OMSI and the New York Botanical Garden. He is inspired by Nordic Northwest’s mission, vision, inclusive programming, beautiful campus, and role as a welcoming home for community. Andrew is also an avid cross-country skier who can often be found with his family at Teacup Nordic Center during the winter, and he and his wife, Mavia, love exploring the trails, woodlands, and waterways of the Pacific Northwest with their children. Although Andrew officially begins on June 29, the community will have a chance to welcome Andrew and his family at Oregon Midsummer. We are thrilled for this next chapter and excited for the passion, thoughtfulness, and care Andrew will bring to Nordic Northwest’s future.

The summer solstice only comes once a year. For generations, people across the Nordic countries have marked the longest days of the year with music, dancing, food, flower crowns, and community celebrations. Oregon Midsummer brings those traditions to life right here in the Pacific Northwest. Join us June 26–27 as we celebrate the height of summer with live entertainment, Nordic traditions, delicious food and drink, artisan vendors, and activities for all ages. Come welcome summer the Nordic way.

Come learn how cordage (rope) has been made by humans for thousands of years using natural materials. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore how people have worked with plants to create strong, functional tools from the landscape. We’ll cover what cordage is, how to ethically harvest natural fibers, and different processing methods. You’ll have the opportunity to work with materials like yucca and jute, and learn basic twisting and weaving techniques as you create your own net bag to take home. This class is beginner-friendly and designed to be both practical and enjoyable. Learn more: https://www.nordicnorthwest.org/event-details/wilderness-skills-intro-to-cordage
