Dear friends in the Pacific Northwest,
For our forthcoming programme, its title Mysteries and Miracles gives us an opportunity to explore the way composers from different Renaissance traditions reacted to something essential to Christian faith. The attraction to me was that the concept of a mystery lies outside dogma, meaning that atmosphere would become an important part of the music. Victoria is one of the best at this from any period, but then so also are Tallis and Pärt. At the other end of the spectrum are madrigal composers like Giaches de Wert and Francisco Guerrero, who simply take the words and paint them.
We are enormously looking forward to visiting you again, working under the welcoming umbrella of Ca****la Romana. Thanks also to my friend Mark Powell, whom I have now known for a very long time.
—Peter Phillips, Tallis Scholars Director
