MYTH: “Running fast is the best way to get faster!”
TRUTH: To run fast, you have to run “slow” on some days! The real fitness gains from a hard workout don’t take place during the run, but during the recovery. Hard training days break down muscle fibers and stress your cardiovascular system. By repairing these muscles and adapting to the stress, you become stronger and increase your aerobic capacity!
If you never take easy days, or you don’t truly take the easy runs easy, your body is unable to recover and reap the benefits. Running at the relaxed pace of an easy run is also necessary to build your crucial aerobic engine, which you’ll miss out on if your easy runs are too fast and become more of an anaerobic effort!
A great way to make sure you aren’t running an easy run too fast is by testing whether you can hold a conversation while you run.
TLDR: Easy runs should be EASY!
