Northeast Emergency Food Program

The Northeast Emergency Food Program (NEFP) meets the urgent food needs of our North and Northeast Portland neighbors (we also serve the entire Portland metro area), while working to develop community solutions to secure access to adequate, affordable, and healthy food. The small staff and large group of volunteers provide food, social service referrals, and other services to people in need. Peopl

NEFP is open three days a week to help our neighbors through hard times. Next chance: Saturday 9:30-noon when we will have all of the items pictured here (plus more).

For over fifty years, CROP Hunger Walks have been raising money to end hunger locally and globally. No one in this world should be hungry. That's why the CROP Hunger Walk is more than just a gathering of people in a place. It's a movement, taking steps and raising funds together to provide meals for those in our own community who need them - and supporting programs that create greater food security in communities all around the world.

NEFP will be the local recipient of the Portland CROP Walk this year. It's not for two months, but we want to make sure that you have plenty of time put together a team! Links to sign up will be in the comments! Let's come together and make this the most successful CROP Hunger Walk Portland has ever seen!

We learned recently that Krystal Sharinghousen passed away on Monday, and we want to share this sad news with our community. Krystal was part of the EMO team since 2000. She worked in the EMO front office for over 20 years and then transferred to our Northeast Emergency Food Program during the COVID pandemic. She continued to volunteer at the food pantry after leaving her position, usually on Saturdays. She was one of the most consistent and familiar faces greeting our clients.

We know she loved her son, whom she called "the tall one." She loved reading. She loved helping NEFP run smoothly to serve as many people as possible. She was a critical part of keeping the wheels rolling safely during the pandemic.

Our best guess is that Krystal would appreciate you taking a moment to remember a happy memory of her, but then she would want you to get back to work, preferably while listening to country music.

We will miss you, Krystal.
