Perhaps my favorite stop in Norway was Balestrand, where we came across the workshop of Gjøa Ese, an expert weaver and knitter, and her friend Gwyneth. We were tempted in by the colorful yarn hanging in the window in their early-20th-century building. They showed me their naturally dyed yarns and described how they would dry plants in the summer and spring and dye their wool yarn during the winter. The blankets they wove were recreations of traditional Norwegian designs, including Gjøa’s own heirloom from her grandmother. I’m returning one day with room in my luggage for one of those blankets.
