Always beware of scams! A reminder that social media marketplaces can be a hotbed for scams.

Are you a frequent user of online marketplaces to buy and sell items? If so, you must be aware of the latest scam targeting buyers and sellers on sites like Facebook, Craigslist, and more. These social media marketplace scams are increasingly dangerous and can leave you without your hard-earned money - and even your identity.

If you’re selling items online, watch out for these scams:

Fraudulent payment scams: Make sure you never give anything away before you get the money! The best way to ensure your safety and security is to meet in a well-lit, public place and exchange the item for cash.

Overpayment scams: Be on the lookout for a scam that's been circulating, where buyers send more money than you're expecting via a check or an email from a seemingly legitimate payment platform like PayPal or Zelle. Never send back the difference in cash or by an online method.

Google voice verification code scams: Scammers are asking people to 'verify their identity' using a Google code sent to their phone or email. Don't fall for it!

Buyers beware of these scams:

Rental property scams: Beware of criminals pretending to own rental properties and offering them at suspiciously low prices. If the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is!

Advanced payment scams: Anytime you're asked to make a payment in advance of negotiating price before seeing an item - don't do it!

Counterfeit/defective/fake products: Don't let yourself get taken advantage of! Remember: if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If the price seems unusually low and there is only one image available for the item, it's probably best to err on the side of caution.
